The Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum opened its doors in 1930 as the first public planetarium in the Americas. The Museum has continued to develop over the years, and for many years has been considered one of the best institutions of its kind in the world. Most notable is the traditional domed planetarium, The Sky Theater, which presents a number of shows that display the constellations and planets. At the Gateway to the Universe exhibit you can walk across the galaxies and infinite space.
The Sky Pavilion is the newest area of the museum and features the StarRider Theater, which sends visitors on a virtual-reality trek into outer space using NASA space-probe data. Serious students of astronomy join Chicago's school children at the Adler Planetarium. A wealth of scientific material is displayed and presented inventively enough to keep everyone interest. The museum is located on Chicago's lakefront at the south end of Grant Park, across the street from the Field museum and next to the John G. Shedd Aquarium. The planetarium and aquarium can be combined into one fairly full day of activity.
