Chicago Historical Society
Chicago has a long and colorful history. Beginning as a simple trading post, then becoming a fort, growing to a frontier town, and eventually earning its status as America's "Second City". Along the way it was completely destroyed by fire, survived gangsters and race riots and hosted more American Presidential nomination conventions than any other city in the nation. All of that history (and more) has been carefully archived and presented at the Chicago Historical Society.
The Historical Society has collected over 20 million items, which it has carefully archived and preserved, many of which are on permanent display. One of the favorite areas - at least for Chicago's schoolchildren - is the Diorama Room. Here you will see presentations of all eras of the city's development presented in miniature models. Special exhibits focus on a number of aspects of Chicago's life and history, such as its role as the nation's transportation capital and the immigrants which have made the city the most diverse in the country.
