Boats, Lake Michigan
Lake Michigan is the third largest Great Lake by surface area and the sixth largest freshwater lake in the world. Bordered by Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin it is the only one of the Great Lakes that lies completely within the borders of the United States. Millions of visitors flock annually to its lakeshores, dunes, beaches and national parks.
Because Lake Michigan is joined to Lake Huron at the Straits of Mackinac, they are actually considered one lake. The lake's cul-de-sac formation means that water entering the lake circulates slowly and remains for a long time before it leaves the basin. Lake Michigan has an average depth of 279 feet and boasts some of the best fishing for steelhead, salmon, trout and bass.
Throughout history, Lake Michigan has had its fair share of names, having been called the Grand Lac, Lake of the Stinking Water, Lake of the Puants, Lac des Illinois, Lac St. Joseph, Lac Dauphin, and the Native American name Michi Gami.
