Magnificent Mile Chicago It would be easy to categorize Chicago's "Magnificent Mile" as a shopping district. With over 400 stores and 3 major shopping centers it almost seems obvious. But the stretch of Michigan Avenue that runs north from the Chicago River to Lake Michigan is much more than that! It is true that every major upscale retail name has an address along "the Mile", but you want to do more than shop while you are here. Beginning at the river you will see two of Chicago's most impressive buildings: the glistening white marble Wrigley Building and Tribune Tower. The Wrigley Building went up first around 1920. Chicago was trying to lure business north of the river and the famous chewing gum manufacturer set the tone. At night the building is awash with light, making it one of the most easily recognizable buildings in the US. Right across the street is the Gothic Tribune Tower complete with pieces of the Taj Mahal, Great Wall of China and other famous edifices built into its intricate façade. As you continue north you will pass the aforementioned stores, but don't get distracted by the trinkets and bright lights.
There is a fascinating garden tour tucked right into the middle of this downtown district. You can see the details and a map at clicking here for the
magnificent mile website. As you approach the north end of the mile you will see the historic Water Tower, and the shopping center which now bears its name. No matter when you visit Chicago, you will want to take a walk up this street. At Christmastime the lights give a festive touch, and festivals are held along the avenue throughout the year, making Magnificent Mile a bit different every time you visit it.
